It is a traditional show where military pilots, navy personnel take part and show their performance to the civilians. North ave beach is both the best and worst place to watch - great view but gets way too crowded so I recommend staying away from there if you don't like big crowds. To which I reply it's fucking summer and it's a fucking jet. You can get to the calendar at any time through the button on the blue navigation bar at the top of this page.

No one in Chicago enjoys this event, and its a burden to anyone living here. The neighborhoods around North Avenue beach are very congested the whole weekend. The two most traumatic experiences in the nation's history were the Civil War 1861-65 , in which a northern Union of states defeated a secessionist Confederacy of 11 southern slave states, and the Great Depression of the 1930s, an economic downturn during which about a quarter of the labor force lost its jobs.

City of Chicago :: Chicago Air and Water Show

The Air and Water Show is the largest free show of its kind in the world. But is it worth it. Rarely do you get a chance to see this fighter aircraft in such spectacular action. I think the venue on the lake shore is amazing. You get a full free show of highly expert pilots flying aircraft that cost more than what most people make in their entire lives. What's the bad value in this. I love that the planes zooming overhead are exciting for both adults and kids - similar to the joy of watching fireworks. There's skill, daring and community. I love the parachutes that spiral down and the planes that fly in tight formations. One of my favorite tricks is when a plane flies straight up and then free-falls for a few seconds. People can watch the show from the beach which has it's own set of variables: playing in the sand and water, picnics and tanning. I've always watched from a nearby building either in the air conditioning or the rooftop. Either way, you can listen to commentary of the show from a radio. I never realized that there was a patriotic connection to the Air and Water Show until I read other reviews of the event. There are some military planes in the show and a U. I always viewed the show as a display of great skill honed over years and perhaps this perception is revealing my ignorance. The neighborhoods around North Avenue beach are very congested the whole weekend. Usually, street parking on LaSalle is free, but the city restricts it on that weekend. I can only imagine that a free, family-friendly event can turn sour very quickly when you discover a ticket on your car or can't find your car at all. I recommend cycling, taking public transportation or a taxi to avoid this problem. It's a cool show- yes absolutely. Love seeing the F-35 with the P51 Mustang. And of course the Thunder Birds. But there's too much down time in between. Unless your right by North Ave Beach which I was not. Tip, it's slow between 12:30 to 2:30 where you have the C-130, parachuters, civilian flyers which can be better appreciated if your close to or right on North Ave Beach. For the rest of us, not so much. There so many missing planes like the B-1, B-2,and B-52 Bombers. The F- 22 raptor, F-15 Eagle and unless I missed it the F-18 which was scheduled. I often pontificate not to complain about a free show. My excuse is, I've seen this Airshow better in the past with more military planes. Anyway, you can call me a hypocrite now. chicago air and water show 2019 By far chicago air and water show 2019 of the coolest experiences in Chicago. chicago air and water show 2019 The best place to watch these in on North Shore beach. If you have young kids, you may want to bring ear muffs to help protect their ears. I was in Chicago August 19, 2018 60th Anniversary. So I got a chance to catch the Chicago Air and Water Show. The beach was overly packed and I didn't feel like heading over there to watch it so instead I went up to the 360 Chicago and watched over there overlooking the North Beach. It was a good experience. My parents took us on a gorgeous sunny day and we watched from the north side of the pier's far end. There was the Aeroshell Acrobatic duo, the Firebirds Delta team, a few biplanes, and some parachute squadrons. Some jets were louder and faster than others, but none came close to the showstoppers: The U. On more than one occasion, they zipped over us bystanders from behind at Navy Pier and I damn near pissed myself. Everyone had a great time and took some excellent photos of the hi-octane action. Highly recommended for visitors to the city and locals alike. One of the most boring, pointless, and annoying Chicago events. If I had a little kid who was obsessed with planes I would take him or her but otherwise this is a skippable event. If you must, get noise-cancelling headphones for them. The planes are extremely loud; I saw a nearby baby screaming in pain from the noise. What happened to our military??. Yet we got harassed for having yellow tape up blocking our tiny area. The Air and Water Show just makes me feel like a kid again. From seeing them start practice runs prior to the weekend until Sunday when I actually make way to the sands of North Ave Beach. Every time I see a Blue Angel in the Chicago sky it's a sight and worthy of me dropping everything I'm doing. Now every year all you hear is complaints from it's too hot and this year's 2017 was too loud. To which I reply it's fucking summer and it's a fucking jet. Now sure the beach is balls packed on this event and if you want a good spot then it shouldn't be an issue to get up earlier. There's no harm in sleeping in and catching the air show from other side of the bridge cause the water show is extra weak anyways, plus you'll be more comfortable. Now if you do hit the sands just bring the right crew. In the years since Mayor Daley gangstered Meigs Field the air show has moved along slower since planes have to come from armpit of America, Gary, Indiana. This is alright because you can people watch your ass off. Then take to the skies. Would've been 5 stars if not for the slow pace between time and because when I was a kid they used to park select planes beach side for up close and personal action. I thought we were in a war zone ; after a few frantic phonecalls was informed it was practice for the big day. I have been attending the show on and off over the years but this year we went to a friends rooftop on lakeshore and a fantastic experience on the last day from 1-3pm that was enough time to experience the best of the show. Its a Chicago tradition, as residents we should support it. Its fun for families and kids!. I'm surprised this event doesn't have 4-5 stars. I loved going to the air and water show this year. Unfortunately I only caught the last 30 minutes of it but loved it. North ave beach is both the best and worst place to watch - great view but gets way too crowded so I recommend staying away from there if you don't like big crowds. The show itself is great - all the cool formations are really fun to watch. And did I mention again it's free. They have this show for a full weekend, both Saturday and Sunday for several hours. I can imagine how it would be annoying to hear loud sounds for 2 days straight if you live nearby. I would definitely go next year. I enjoyed watching this show very much. To see is to believe!!. This is a great show!!. I thought that every pilots tries to give audience a lot of joy and they does!!. Their technique of the flight are so amazing!!. I felt that pilots enjoyed their flight, and their joy was transmitted to audience, and we could be happy!!. And please try to fly safely. People bursting with patriotic fever get to see U. Instead of the gladiators of the Roman circus, this 21st Century equivalent feeds the masses their entertaining dose of military might, all in the hopes that they won't pay attention as Congress destroys those masses' incomes, jobs, health care, pollution controls and rights. Not all of it is military oriented, but enough of it to make it disgusting. Barnum comes to Chicago every year, and this is precisely where. Avoid it, find something productive to do, and stand up for a better use of taxpayer money. I'm seriously a big kid when it comes to air shows, and I have very fond memories of going to air shows with my Dad when I was younger. This was my first time at the Chicago air and water show, and it was Amazing. I wish I could have gone both days, but I was only able to make it to the show on Sunday. I headed out early and got to the beach soon after the show started. There were so many people and the weather was hot, but it really was perfect otherwise. I happened upon some really nice ladies who let me and my friend sit with them at a restaurant right on the edge of the beach. I had a perfect view of the show along with good company, shade and drinks. I could not have found a more perfect place to watch the show. The air show started off a little slow for me. One plane or jet here and there but as the show progressed it got more exciting. Aside from the Blue Angels I'd say that the Breitling Jet Team was very impressive!!. This was the Breitling team's debut flying tour in the United States, chicago air and water show 2019 I hope they continue in the U. This is a 7 plane team from France which is absolutely incredible to watch. The other team that is always incredible to watch is the Blue Angels. They did the chicago air and water show 2019 finale, and did not disappoint. Of all the teams that flew on Sunday the Blue Angels came the closest to the crowd which is so cool to see. They did a great combination of tricks and some were so impressive and seemed so close together it's a wonder they don't run into each other. The Blue Angles pilots are the best in the world when it comes to these shows, and it was such a huge pleasure to watch them in action. I would definitely recommend the Chicago Air and Water show to anyone who likes this type of event. It's very impressive to see the jets in action. Another great thing chicago air and water show 2019 this particular show is that you can watch from so many different places. The show spans across two beaches, or if you want a totally different view you can go up in the Willis Tower and see the planes flying below you. I didn't get a chance to go up into the tower on this trip, but I will plan for it next time. I'm already planning in my head for next time. Go, and enjoy the show. My advice if you plan to stay awhile is to get there early!. I've watch the air and water show from Lake Point Towers, the Lincoln Park base ball field, and this time I tried to watch it from North Beach. I got there around 11:00 and practically ever area of the beach was full. No shade either for those of us adverse to the sun. The airshow performances are always good. Just keep in mind where you watch it from. I would suggest a friends rooftop or an establishment viewing party. Can this stop being a thing. No one in Chicago enjoys this event, and its a burden to anyone living here. Too many drunk belligerent people that don't necessarily enhance a beach-going experience. Yes, there will be huge crowds and jets roaring in the air. The only reason I'm deducting a star is due to the military's budget cuts thanks Obama which have greatly reduced the amount of military acts performing. It's pretty much only 2 or 3 jet acts counting the Blue Angels so most of the show is propeller aerobatics. But is it worth it. Rarely do you get a chance to see this fighter aircraft in such spectacular action. I think the venue on the lake shore is amazing. You get a full free show of highly expert pilots flying aircraft that cost more than what most people make in their entire lives. What's the bad value in this?.

A handful of other shows are usually added as the year progresses, and many Marine Corps Air Stations end up hosting demos as well. The best way to get there? I can imagine how it would be annoying to hear loud sounds for 2 days straight if you live nearby. I think the venue on the lake shore is amazing. We have also included links to event discussion threads on our forums, so you can get more information or ask questions about attending. If you are driving, it's highly suggested that you get there early to score a parking spot near the Lincoln Park Zoo. Air Force Thunderbirds and Golden Knights Parachute Team performed to a huge crowd and the event became a Chicago summer tradition. I think the venue on the lake shore is amazing. Yes, there will be huge crowds and jets roaring in the air. I didn't get a chance to go up into the tower on this trip, but I will plan for it next time. Barnum comes to Chicago every year, and this is precisely where.
